Vermont Green Football Club announced today that the club will field a women’s team for an exhibition match on June 22nd, 2024 at 6:00pm at Virtue Field.

The match will signal Vermont Green FC’s commitment to explore the expansion of the club to include a full-season women’s team. It will be played against FC Laval of Ligue1 Québec.

“We’re so excited to feature this historic match in June. It will serve as a celebration of women’s soccer in our state—honoring the history and enthusiasm for the sport here—and show our commitment to growing the women’s game” said Vermont Green FC co-founder Matthew Wolff. “Knowing our community, we think this could be one of the biggest events of the summer.”

Vermont Green Football Club has already begun the process of exploring the path to adding a women’s program in order to build a more equitable soccer infrastructure in the Green Mountain State. The club will refer to a Women’s Soccer Advisory Committee for guidance in the process. The committee will feature the University of Vermont women’s soccer coach Kristi Huizenga and U.S. Women’s National Team World Cup winner Sam Mewis. The match will be the first of yearly women’s exhibition matches until the permanent team is formed.

“Our goal has always been to build the best soccer club for our community. We believe we can attract top quality players that will want to play in the professional atmosphere that Virtue Field has become known for.” said Sporting Director Adam Pfeifer. “This is an important step for continuing to push the limits of what we can achieve at Vermont Green FC, and we look forward to a very special night of soccer in Vermont.”

The Vermont Green FC roster will feature familiar faces, with the first commitments coming from the University of Vermont’s Jill Brody, Laney Ross, Bailey Ayer, Maddy Cronin, and Pittsford, Vt. native Olivia White.

The team will fully represent the Vermont Green FC brand, wearing training and match day gear that is consistent with the rest of the club. The team will be referred to as Vermont Green FC. The technical staff, roster, and information on open tryouts will be released at a later date. The match will also feature special programming on the concourse and at half-time that supports the night’s theme and mission.

Vermont Green FC will follow in the footsteps of Manchester, Vt. based club Vermont Fusion, who fielded a highly successful team in the Women’s Premier Soccer League in recent years. While the Fusion will not play in the WPSL in 2024, they were the sole representative of women’s soccer at the semi-professional level in the state since the Vermont Lady Voltage in 2008.

This historic exhibition match completes the full 10-match home schedule for the 2024 Vermont Green FC season. The club’s USL League Two team kicks off the season on May 18th away at Boston City FC.

Tickets to the match are included for 2024 Season Ticket holders. Single Match Tickets are on sale now: tickets.vermontgreenfc.com.
