It was a wild one at Virtue Field on Saturday with the Green securing three points in a 3-1 win over Boston City FC. A record-breaking crowd of 1,451 fans pushed the Boys in Green on to an important victory. VGFC will now control its own destiny in the hunt for the Eastern Conference wildcard playoff spot.

For the second match in a row, the Green were on the scoresheet early when Daniel Pacella delivered a ball to Eythor Bjørgolfsson who headed it home. Moments later, Boston City FC would draw level from the penalty spot.

In the second half, centerback Mark O’Neill took it on his own, cleverly weaving through the Boston defense before slotting it into the bottom corner to restore the Green lead in the 48th minute. 20 minutes later, Bjørgolfsson smashed home his second of the day to give the home side an insurance goal.

It was a hotly contested match for all 90 minutes that saw Bjørgolfsson and Boston City’s Herrera both receiving red cards in the second half. The match would end on a difficult note, as Vermont’s Sam McCann collapsed on the pitch after an earlier injury and was forced to seek medical treatment. McCann was discharged late Saturday and his condition has improved. The club is grateful to all of the fans that reached out with concern.

Vermont Green FC will now play two on the road as they take on Black Rock FC in Lake Placid before heading to Albany to take on Blackwatch Rush. The Vermonters return to Virtue Field for Labor Night on July 13th to face Pathfinder FC.

Notes from Burlington:

  • “Very heated and strange game, but extremely proud of the lads to push through and come out with the win. We were very dangerous offensively throughout the whole game and despite all the controversies, we stayed true to our game. Bittersweet feeling to score two in my last game for the team. Thank you VGFC and Burlington! Up the Green 💚” – Eythor Bjørgolfsson
  • Bjørgolfsson has played his final match for the club as he now departs for Norway. He leaves the club as the first-ever goalscorer and the all-time leading goalscorer with 6.
  • Miguel Ventura, Brage Aasen, Bilal Kamal, and Sam McCann have also departed the club for the summer. Thank you so much, boys!
