Burlington, VT. – Vermont Green FC is partnering with the Chittenden Area Transportation Management Authority (CATMA) for their inaugural season to address the Club’s carbon footprint and support fans through education and initiatives that reduce transportation costs, increase convenience, and reduce pollution that drives climate change.

CATMA is a non-profit 501(c)(3), membership-based, transportation management association serving Chittenden County. Their mission is to work with members and community partners to plan and manage safe, convenient, and economical parking and transportation options in ways that better coordinate land use and reduce environmental impacts.

Transportation in the U.S. is the leading source of greenhouse gas pollution driving climate change, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This is also true of Vermont. Due to its rural and village-based land-use patterns, automobile use accounts for 90% of commute trips. Despite efforts by the state and supporting transportation organizations to reduce vehicle miles traveled (VMT) by Vermonters, the state remains above the national average and has seen a 4% increase in VMT since 2014.

“We are thrilled to support Vermont Green FC on their environmental justice mission. The Club is serious about providing support to staff, players, coaches, and fans to increase access to sustainable transportation to and from club matches and activities. There is a strong ecosystem of transportation options and resources in the state that the club is seeking to leverage to meet its environmental and social justice goals. It’s exciting to see the vibrancy and fun they are bringing to our community while working to make transportation more sustainable and equitable,” said Sandy Thibault, CATMA Executive Director.

Transportation is a prime example of a basic human need that intersects environmental stewardship and social justice. Access to transportation determines our access to essential services and empowers individuals through better health care, employment opportunities, education, culturally appropriate and healthy food choices, green spaces, and social support by more easily connecting with family and friends. Transportation solutions that address racial, economic, and disability equity stand the best chance of becoming immediate and enduring long-term solutions for reducing climate pollution.

“Working with CATMA is a critical piece of our efforts to address environmental justice within our organization and our community. Vermont’s rural landscape makes it very challenging to move around without an automobile, which is not always a viable option for low-income individuals and families, or former refugees or immigrants who must navigate additional challenges with automobile ownership. Partnering with CATMA has already taught us a lot this season about how to better support all Vermonters in their transportation needs, while also addressing our carbon footprint as an organization. It’s been a delight working with CATMA on our learning journey,” said Keil Corey, Vermont Green FC Chief Purpose Officer.

July 2 Match Information

CATMA representatives will speak about sustainable transportation opportunities and resources at halftime and will be tabling at the game to talk with supporters about how they can reduce transportation costs and greenhouse gas pollution that drives climate change.
