Burlington, Vt., June 7, 2024 Vermont Green FC announced today that Sam Mewis will coach the club’s inaugural Women’s Exhibition Match on Saturday, June 22nd at Virtue Field. The 31-year-old World Cup Champion has been advising the club on its early exploration of expanding into the women’s game, and will now help lead the club into its first match. Mewis will be joined by Coach Brad Agoos and Athletic Trainer Kate Harney on the staff for the match and will work alongside Sporting Director Adam Pfeifer to complete the roster in the coming weeks.

“I am so excited and honored to be a part of Vermont Green this summer. When I moved to Vermont, I really wanted to connect with the people here, enjoy the outdoors, and make an impact somehow. I can’t believe that an opportunity like this presented itself so quickly—to help grow women’s soccer with an environmentally conscious and social justice centered club. I can’t wait to coach this team and meet the wonderful fans who make this club so special!” said Mewis.

Mewis scored 24 goals in 83 appearances for the US Women's National Team between 2014 and 2021.

Sam Mewis joins Vermont Green FC’s staff bringing with her nearly ten years of professional experience at the club level and 83 appearances with the United States Women’s National Team. The Massachusetts native boasts a decorated career, most notably winning the World Cup in 2019. Mewis won the NCAA National Champion in 2013, three NWSL championships, an FA Cup with Manchester City, and was recognized as the U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year in 2020.

“This could not be a more exciting time for Vermont soccer,” said Sporting Director Adam Pfeifer “Sam Mewis has competed and won at the absolute highest levels of the game. We are privileged to be able to work with her for this match and are grateful that she believes in the project. June 22nd is going to be an incredible celebration and a significant step forward for the club’s long term goals.”

Mewis retired from professional soccer in January 2024, and has since ignited a career in media, hosting The Women’s Game podcast on the Men In Blazers digital network. She lives in Vermont with her partner, Pat and dog, Finn.

Mewis won NWSL championships in 2016, 2018, and 2019.
