Two Vermont Green FC players were selected in the 2025 MLS SuperDraft on Friday.
Sydney Wathuta, who started both matches for the club in the 2024 U.S. Open Cup run in March and April was selected with 16th overall pick by the Colorado Rapids. Wathuta wraps up a monumental week in his young career: the 20-year-old winger won the National Championship with the University of Vermont on Monday.
Centerback Reid Fisher’s name was also called in the first round of the draft, as Toronto FC selected the San Diego State sophomore with the 23rd overall pick.
Wathuta and Reid become the sixth and seventh players in Vermont Green FC history to be drafted at the MLS SuperDraft. At the 2023 SuperDraft, Owen O’Malley, Eythor Bjørgolfsson, and Nick Christoffersen were selected by St. Louis CITY SC, Seattle Sounders FC, and CF Montreal respectively. In the 2024 SuperDraft, Nate Jones was selected fifth overall by Austin FC (and traded to the Colorado Rapids), and Zach Zengue was drafted by Columbus Crew SC 58th overall.
The draftees now have their MLS rights claimed by the clubs that selected them. Those rights will remain with clubs even if they opt to return to their Universities or to Vermont Green FC.
