Three players from the Vermont Green FC inaugural season squad were selected in the 2023 Major League Soccer Superdraft.
MLS expansion side St Louis City SC selected Owen O’Malley with the ninth overall pick. Comfortable as both a right back and left winger, O’Malley contributed three goals and two assists in 1140 minutes for the Green. His dynamic, fearless style of play made him an instant fan favorite in Burlington last summer.
With the 38th pick, Seattle Sounders FC selected Vermont’s number 9 Eythor Bjørgolfsson. The Norwegian-Icelandic forward was an integral part of the first-ever VGFC squad, scoring six goals, including the first in club history. “Vermont Haaland”, as he became known, joins a Sounders side that is the defending CONCACAF Champions League winners and one of the most successful clubs in North America, stacking up 13 trophies since 2009.
Canadian goalkeeper Nick Christoffersen — a product of the Toronto FC academy — was selected by CF Montreal with the 83rd overall pick. The University of Pennsylvania keeper helped the Quakers to their first Ivy League title since 2013 and led the league with a 0.73 GAA.
Everyone at Vermont Green sends a massive congratulations to Owen, Eythor, and Nick. We are so, so proud of you and you will forever be a part of our historic inaugural season. Wherever your journeys take you, we’ll be supporting. Forever Green!
