Adam Pfeifer’s men secured an impressive 3-0 win over Albany Blackwatch Rush in front of 1,233 fans at Virtue Field on Tuesday. The Vermonters scored in the 20th second through Vermont-local Charlie Adams to open the scoring. After the goal, the home side continued to dominate throughout most of the first half but were kept to one goal for most of the first 45 due to the opposing keeper’s impressive heroics. After an abundance of shots from the Green, Adams did eventually manage to find the side a second, in his second-ever USL League 2 start. Adams stole the show with his stellar first half performance and pair of goals.

The second half had a much more controlled tempo, and the Green showed maturity by dictating the match, preserving the two-goal cushion. At the 63rd minute mark, though, Vermont’s dominance paid dividends and Matthew Goncalves scored the third and final goal of the night to secure the win. After the third goal, Green went into cruise control and completely nullified any remnant of a threat that may, or may not have been presented by the side placed 8th in the Northeast Division. Late efforts from O’Malley and Pacella nearly took the score to 4-0, but three was meant to be, and enough to secure the side a vital three points.

Although Vermont has had three matches in seven days, the team looked physically and tactically untouchable to Blackwatch FC. The team managed 16 shots, while the visitors from Albany had just two. Pfeifer’s side will hope to build on the momentum gained this coming Saturday against Boston City FC.

Vermont Green FC will return to Virtue Field on Saturday, July 2nd against Boston City FC in a vital matchup for Vermont’s playoff push. The Vermonters annihilated City last time the two squared off on May 15th, but Boston has been on a four-game winning streak that has helped take them to that ever-coveted third spot in the Northeast. Notes from Burlington:

  • “It was awesome to be home and to get a clean sheet, especially in front of the home fans, and then obviously score a couple of goals was awesome and good. My first two at Virtue. But no, just an awesome atmosphere, and the Green Mountain Bhoys over there bring the energy every day. So it’s awesome to play in front of them, and like I said, the clean sheet is huge, we haven’t had one in a few games, so it was just a good all-around team win. Everybody put in their part and we did what he had to do.” said Charlie Adams.
