Vermont Green FC returned to its winning ways on Saturday with a 2-0 win against Boston Bolts at Virtue Field in Burlington.

The club’s leading goalscorer Diba Nwegbo opened the scoring in the 10th minute of the match, increasing his goal tally to four on the season. Less than two minutes later, Eythor Bjørgolfsson added a second goal for the Green, the striker’s third of the season.

From the jump, the Vermonters were the dominant side, producing a multitude of chances throughout the 90 minutes. The starting back line and keeper all currently play their collegiate ball at Creighton University, including the debut of center back Mark O’Neill who had been training with a professional club in the Republic of Ireland up until last week. Vermont Green FC has the fewest goals conceded in the Northeast Division.

Despite the unseasonably cold weather and pouring rain, the attendance on the night was nearly 800, with an atmosphere that pushed the boys to victory.

The Green Mountain Boys will be on the road this week with a match away at AC Connecticut on Wednesday in Hartford, CT before a Saturday night clash with a Western Mass Pioneers side that has won five in a row.

Vermont faithful will have the chance to see their club at home again on Tuesday, June 28th at Virtue Field where the club will host “Youth Soccer Night.” Tickets can be purchased at vtgrn.com/single-match-tickets

Notes from the match:

  • “I’m honestly glad we could get back to winning ways after dropping points in our last two games and it feels even better to get on the scoresheet off an assist from my college teammate Nathan. We’re just happy to get a result and we’re trying to gain momentum as we start playing two games a week every week until the end of the season. We have a tough run of games coming up so we need to be locked in more than ever and secure as many points as possible leading up to the end of the season” said Diba Nwegbo.
  • “I’m proud of the performance from the team to bounce back after a string of difficult results and get back on track. We know what we need to do from this point forward and we’re already shifting focus to Connecticut on Wednesday,” said Head Coach Adam Pfeifer.
