HISTORY

Vermont Green FC and AC Connecticut will face off for just the third time on Saturday night. The matchup between the two sides has a high-scoring history, with 19 goals being scored in only 180 minutes of football between them. In 2022, the Green defeated the Connecticut side in Hartford by a score of 6-4, and in 2023 the match ended 6-3 at Virtue Field in favor of the Green.

While it’s Vermont that has taken maximum points from the two matches, the goal-scoring prowess of the Connecticuters can not be underestimated, and the visitors will have a dangerous and familiar weapon at their disposal…

AC CONNECTICUT IN FOCUS

AC Connecticut will come to Burlington on Saturday with 1-1-1 record, sitting on 4 points and in 4th place, just one spot behind the Green. They are coming off an exciting 3-2 victory over Albany Rush on the road on Wednesday, May 29.

The Virtue Field faithful will see a very recognizable face in the Connecticut XI on Saturday as Sam McCann is expected to lead the line for his hometown team. The lanky striker famously scored the winning goal for Vermont Green FC against Lionsbridge FC in the 2022 USL League Two playoffs, completing the upset of the overall top seed of that year’s tournament and cementing himself in Vermont Green lore. Once a Green, always a Green, but on Saturday night the home side will need to be diligent to thwart the signature runs of McCann and his new teammates.

Sam McCann, who was with Vermont Green in 2022 and 2023, solidified his name in club lore when he scored the winning goal in the first round of the USL League Two Playoffs against Lionsbridge FC.

SCORE GOALS, STAY UNBEATEN

The Green are unbeaten through four games, but are focused on ramping up the goalscoring. To complement the defensive core that has only conceded just once this season, Vermont’s attacking contingent is building up chemistry and ready to showcase their hard work in front of a big crowd on Saturday night.

With the arrival of Xavi O’Neil (who recorded an assist in his first start Tuesday) Adam Pfeifer has another creative option to call upon to take on visiting defenses and attempt to open the floodgates.

Xavi O'Neil notched an assist in his first start for Vermont on Tuesday vs Black Rock FC.

PORTUGUESE REINFORCEMENTS

The Vermont Green FC roster was strengthened all over the pitch with new arrivals this week, including that of Portuguese veterans Rodrigo Vaza and Bernardo Prego. While the pair have only just arrived, their experience and leadership in the squad through multiple seasons and the U.S. Open Cup campaign is yet another interesting option for Pfeifer.

Rodrigo Vaza is back for a third year with Vermont Green FC.

PRIDE NIGHT AT VIRTUE FIELD

Saturday night’s match is Pride Night, celebrating the start of Pride Month and the LGBTQ+ community in Vermont and beyond. See you there!
