Vermont Green FC travels to Danbury, CT on Tuesday, June 18 for this season’s reverse fixture with AC Connecticut. The Vermonters are coming off a busy stretch, playing two top-of-the-table clashes against Seacoast United and Western Mass in the same week, and will now look for a bounce-back performance in an unforgiving and unfamiliar away trip.
HISTORY
Vermont Green FC and AC Connecticut will face off for the fourth time on Tuesday night. The matchup between the two sides has a high-scoring history, with 26 goals scored in only 270 total minutes of football. In 2022, the Green defeated the Connecticut side in Hartford by a score of 6-4, and in 2023 the match ended 6-3 at Virtue Field in favor of the Green.
On June 1st, 2024, Vermont Green FC defeated AC Connecticut 7-0 in front of a sold out crowd at Virtue Field. Yaniv Bazini scored a hat-trick after coming on at half-time.
AC CONNECTICUT IN FOCUS
AC Connecticut are 2-4-1 this season, their 7 points sit them at 6th place in the USL League Two Northeast Division. The Danbury, CT outfit are coming into the match after an important 3-2 victory over Boston City FC, and will look to Sam McCann and co. to start a new run of form.
AC Connecticut play their home matches at Western Connecticut State University, a destination that will be new for Vermont. In previous seasons, Connecticut fielded their home matches in Hartford. Adam Pfeifer’s side will need to prepare for a long trip and new terrain, because AC Connecticut will be waiting for them with all the comforts of home.
IN CONTROL WITH SAM LAYTON
A bright spot for the Green in the 2024 campaign has been Australian defensive midfielder Sam Layton. Often putting his body on the line, Layton has made a fortress in front of the Vermont backline, controlling his area with ruthless effectiveness. If Vermont Green FC are to return to winning ways, much emphasis will be put on goalscorers like Yaniv Bazini and Jacob Labovitz, but to find the freedom to build the attack they’ll rely heavily on the defensive engine of Sam Layton.
LOCKERMANN IS BACK
While Layton roves the defensive area, another familiar face has returned to the Green that will add fresh legs to the attacking core. Nick Lockermann, famous for his U.S. Open Cup heroics and goal against Lexington SC back in March, has completed his transfer back to Vermont Green FC from Ventura County Fusion. Back in his comfort zone, the University of Vermont Catamount from Germany is fit and available for selection.
