Vermont Green FC has appointed Abby Carchio as head coach ahead of the club’s first competitive season in the USL W League, set to kick off in May 2026.
Carchio, a former professional player and Brown University standout, takes the reins from Sam Mewis, who led the club’s exhibition series in 2024 and 2025. Mewis will remain active with the club as an advisor and ambassador.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Abby to the club to lead us in our first W League season,” said Vermont Green FC Sporting Director Adam Pfeifer. “Abby comes to Vermont with a strong resume as a player and coach and we’re confident she’ill be a great fit in our organization. She is committed to the development of top quality pre-professional athletes and also to her own coaching aspirations and growth. Abby has shown she understands our club’s goals both on- and off-the-field. We’re so excited for her to get started.”
Carchio currently serves as an assistant coach at Northeastern University under Head Coach Ashley Phillips, who has praised Carchio for her “deep knowledge of the game, keen attention to detail and inquisitive mindset.” Prior to her role at Northeastern, Carchio—a Lakeville, Massachusetts native—spent one season as interim head coach at Roger Williams University. She holds a UEFA B coaching license and is set to obtain her UEFA A license this year.

Prior to coaching, Carchio was a decorated midfielder at Brown University, captaining the Bears to an Ivy League title in 2019 and earning First Team All-Ivy League honors in three consecutive seasons. She finished her collegiate career ranked 15th all-time at Brown in career points (49), 16th in career goals (16), and eighth in career assists (17).
After Brown, Carchio played professionally in France (AS Saint-Étienne), Denmark (Fortuna Hjørring), Iceland (Keflavík), Lithuania (Gintra Universitetas) and Ireland (Athlone Town).
“I am elated to be a part of Vermont Green FC for its inaugural USLW season. The community and staff have already demonstrated a beautiful passion for the game, and I look forward to bringing that same love and dedication. For these players, I am determined to create a professional training environment rooted in competitiveness, detail, and self-expression. This club is undeniably pushing the needle forward for the women’s game- an ethos that I am honored to be involved with” said Carchio.
Carchio and the Green will begin training in Burlington in early May, and will make their competitive debut in a highly anticipated away fixture at Hartford Athletic on Tuesday, May 19. The Girls in Green will play their home opener on Saturday, May 23 when Hudson Valley Crusaders visit Virtue Field.
The USL W League schedule has been released. The Women’s Season Ticket Lottery is open from February 16 to February 22. Single match tickets go on sale on March 14.
