Make no mistake, this is the biggest match in the history of Vermont Green Football Club.

It’s the final match of the regular season. On Friday night, the Green will head to the historic Lusitano Stadium–the fortress of the Western Mass Pioneers–for a Northeast Division title decider. The Vermonters need a win or draw to complete an unbeaten regular season and earn the club’s first piece of silverware. A loss, however, will put the Pioneers into the top spot on the goal differential tie-breaker.

Vermont Green FC have—in just 13 matches—had their most successful season in club history. After three consecutive third place finishes from 2022-2024, Chris Taylor and his team are eager to complete the job, and reward the Vermont community for their tremendous support.

The goal is the same for both clubs, but the context could not be more stark: Vermont Green FC are looking to emerge as champions for the first time, and Western Mass Pioneers are trying to snatch back the crown that was once theirs…before three consecutive second place finishes behind Seacoast United Phantoms. The Vermonters have yet to trail in league play this season, and Western Mass have been on a scoring frenzy. The Boys in Green are unbeaten, and the Pioneers have only lost once…to the Green on June 17th.

Only one club can emerge Northeast Division Champion. It will be decided on Friday night in Ludlow.

In the final match of the 2024 season, Vermont Green FC defeated Western Mass Pioneers 3-1 to secure a spot in the playoffs.

HISTORY

Vermont Green FC and Western Mass Pioneers have had seven meetings in their rivalry, most recently in June, when goals from Joseph Picotto and Stephane Njike gave the Green a 2-0 win at Virtue Field. The victory brought Vermont’s all-time record against Western Mass to an even 3W-3L-1D.

Scorelines between the two sides have always indicated a proper rivalry, with only the last two meetings ending in multi-goal margins. Three of the seven matchups have ended 1-0.

The Green bested the Pioneers at Virtue Field in the final game of the 2022 season, when Diba Nwegbo famously scored from an impossible angle on the wing. The win clinched a playoff spot for the Green in the club’s inaugural season.

In 2023, Western Mass Pioneers claimed two 1-0 victories, two of Vermont’s three losses that season.

In 2024, the Green went to Lusitano in the final match of the season, needing a win to qualify for the playoffs. Goals from Gerardo Castillo, Mohammed Ibrahim, and Jacob Labovitz completed a 3-1 comeback to propel Vermont into the postseason.

The Pioneers' only loss of the season came against the Green on June 17th, 2025.

WESTERN MASS PIONEERS IN FOCUS

Western Mass Pioneers were founded in 1997 in Ludlow, MA, but the club is the spiritual successor of a soccer community that has existed at the iconic Lusitano Stadium since 1918. The club has had stints in both professional and semi-professional leagues, notably winning the 1999 USL D3 Professional National Championship.

Nestled into Ludlow’s historic Portuguese neighborhood, the club has a rich soccer history, and regularly boasts a pedigree that rivals the best in the nation.

The Pioneers are coached by Federico Molinari—an established and respected coach at the USL League Two level and beyond—and a veteran of the club’s professional era. The Argentine has become known for his particular brand of direct, fast-paced, attacking football that has yielded results year in, year out.

Western Mass have been on a tear in 2025, with 11 wins, 2 draws, and just one loss this season, good for 32 points in the table. They also boast a goal differential of +37, significantly better than Vermont’s +30.

Zach Zengue has been in tremendous form this season, displaying a tireless work rate and an eye for goal.

ZENGUE’S MOMENT

Zach Zengue. It is difficult to understate the impact the Georgetown University attacker has had on the club and community since he arrived in 2023. Zengue has shown his mettle all season long, leading the team with seven goals, and displaying determination and selflessness that has inspired fans all summer long.

ZZ enters the final match of the season in the best form of his career, scoring four goals in the last two matches. If the Green are going to win the league in Ludlow, it may require a standout performance from the captain.
