Vermont Green FC defender Gerardo Castillo has signed his first professional contract with A.D. San Carlos in the Primera División of Costa Rica. The 23-year old from San Jose, Costa Rica joins the top-flight club after three standout seasons with Virginia Commonwealth University, and the 2024 season with the Green.

Castillo joined the Green in March of 2024 for the club’s U.S. Open Cup debut, playing a crucial role in a 4-3 victory over professional club Lexington SC. Castillo recorded an assist in the match.

In the 2024 USL League Two season, Castillo was the joint leader in assists for the club, recording 4 in 11 matches from the left-back position. He scored the go-ahead goal to help lift the Green to a first-ever win at Western Mass’ Lusitano Stadium, which propelled the Vermonters to the 2024 playoffs.

“We knew before we brought him in [from Virginia Commonwealth University] that we were getting a player with a high ceiling. A few minutes into the U.S. Open Cup match against Lexington, we knew we had a player destined for a future as a professional. Our whole club is proud of Gera for making this huge step in his career, and I really think he’s just getting started,” said Adam Pfeifer, Vermont Green FC Sporting Director.

A.D. San Carlos compete in the top flight of Costa Rican soccer, and finished third in the 2024/25 Apertura season, behind the country’s two most successful clubs, LD Alajuelense and Deportivo Saprissa.

Castillo could make his debut as soon as Saturday, January 11th as the “Toros del Norte” host the record-champions Saprissa.

Congratulations, Gera! We’re grateful for your time in Vermont and wish you all the best!
