The University of Vermont Men’s Soccer team made history on Monday night, defeating Marshall University 2-1 in the NCAA National Championship Game in Cary, North Carolina.

The victory marks the Catamounts’ first ever National Championship, and the University’s first National Championship in any sport outside of skiing.

After going down 1-0 in the 67th minute, the “Cardiac Cats” clawed back. Marcel Papp fired home the equalizer in the 80th minute to send the game to overtime. Five minutes into the extra period, Maximilain Kissel beat his defender, rounded the keeper and tucked home the now-iconic golden goal.

Vermont Green FC extends congratulations on the outstanding and historic accomplishment made by Head Coach Rob Dow, the Men’s Soccer program, and the entire UVM Athletics department.

There has never been a better time to be growing Vermont soccer. We’re incredibly grateful to be a part of this collective community and to have the opportunity to work alongside the University in its vision for the game in our state. Up the Cats!
